The short answer: There are three ways to book a stay at a Marriott, Westin, Sheraton, or Ritz-Carlton Vacation Club resort — an OTA (Expedia, Booking.com), direct on Marriott.com, or renting the same villa on VakayMood. Take the Westin Nanea Ocean Villas on Maui, a 2-bedroom villa for Sept 4–8, 2026: Expedia charges $2,940, booking direct is $2,837, and renting the same villa on VakayMood is $1,328 — a $1,509 saving. Booking direct earns Bonvoy points (10 per dollar) plus Elite Night Credits; VakayMood earns the same Elite Night Credits but no points. Here's the thing: even crediting the direct booking every point it earns (~$165 here), the $1,509 you save renting dwarfs it about 9×. The OTA is the worst of all worlds — the highest price, and it earns nothing.

The math that matters: savings vs. points
Here's the trade a Marriott loyalist actually faces. Book direct and you earn Bonvoy points — 10 per dollar, about 24,000 points on this stay, worth roughly $165 at typical valuations (elite members earn more) — plus your Elite Night Credits. Rent on VakayMood and you forgo the points, but you save ~$1,509 and still earn the same Elite Night Credits. The savings are about nine times the value of the points. - Never book an OTA unless it is genuinely the cheapest for your dates — it earns you nothing.
- Book direct only if the price is the same or lower than renting.
